Dr Sesto Cairo MBBS(Hons) FANZCA
Dr Sesto Cairo is a senior Anaesthetist who has practised in Melbourne as a specialist for over 15 years. He has a passion for cardiothoracic and neurosurgical Anaesthesia and is committed to providing the best possible patient care.
Sesto attended Medical School at Monash University and graduated in 1988 with honours. He subsequently worked as a resident in varied positions prior to commencing his anaesthesia training in 1993. Although he was based at the Alfred hospital he also rotated through multiple city and regional hospitals gaining experience in all aspects of anaesthesia and pain management. Sesto completed his anaesthesia training with 2 fellowships – the first at the Alfred and the second in the UK where he worked in a major referral centre specialising in both cardiothoracic and neuroanaesthesia. He was awarded his Fellowship in the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) in 1998. |
Sesto subsequently worked at the Alfred Hospital as a staff specialist for the next 12 years. During his time there he was actively involved in their Heart and Lung Transplant Program as well as gaining significant experience in the management of both severe trauma and critically ill patients. In 2001 he passed the "Examination of Special Competence in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography" (PTEeXAM) set by the National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) in the USA. In 2011 he passed the recertification exam of the NBE indicating continued knowledge and practice in perioperative cardiac ultrasound.
Whilst at the Alfred, Sesto was heavily involved in registrar teaching and was the Supervisor of Training for over 5 years. He also developed a web based registrar assessment tool during that time. In 2005 Sesto became an examiner for the College of Anaesthetists, a role he continues to this day. This involvement enables Sesto to remain abreast of current practices in most fields of anaesthesia in addition to those he regularly practices in.
In 2011, Sesto moved from full time public practice into private practice, in order to pursue his clinical interests. Currently he works predominantly at Cabrini, St Vincent’s and Epworth Hospitals where he provides anaesthesia primarily for patients undergoing cardiac, thoracic and neurosurgical operations. He maintains an association with the Alfred Hospital where he is involved in their Peri operative Medicine Program as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer through the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University.
