Dr Chris Duffy MBBS(Hons) FANZCA PGDipClinUS
Dr Chris Duffy attended medical school at The University of Western Australia, and graduated with Honours in a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1999. He undertook his internship at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, where he worked for a further 2 years as a resident in various surgical and medical fields. He then commenced his training to become a specialist anaesthetist, completing the first 2 years in Perth, before moving to Melbourne in 2005.
Chris gained further experience in Melbourne through his work at the Royal Children's Hospital, Mercy Hospital for Women and The Alfred Hospital. He then completed his training with a fellowship in cardio-thoracic and transplant anaesthesia at The Alfred Hospital, and gained his Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) in 2007. |
Chris began working as a specialist in 2008 in the role of a full time staff anaesthetist at The Alfred Hospital. He worked as a cardiac anaesthetist and was also a member of the heart and lung transplant team where he gained extensive experience in the management of complex cardiac and thoracic surgical patients. In addition to his role in the cardiac unit, he participated in the general activities of the department gaining further experience in the management of major trauma including neurosurgical emergencies, burns and other complex patients requiring urgent surgical care.
During his appointment at The Alfred Hospital, Chris developed an interest in peri-operative echocardiography. In 2008 he passed the "Examination of Special Competence in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography" (PTEeXAM) set by the National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) in the USA. In addition to his interest in transesophageal echo, Chris undertook further work in advanced echocardiography including transthoracic studies and subsequently passed the "Examination of Special Competence in Adult Echocardiography" (ASCeXAM) in 2011, also set by the NBE. To further consolidate his interest in point of care ultrasound and perioperative echocardiography, he completed the Post Graduate Diploma of Clinical Ultrasound through the University of Melbourne in 2019.
In 2013, Chris transitioned from his full time public appointment into private practice, allowing him to focus more on his clinical interests. The majority of Chris' work continues to be in the field of cardio-thoracic and neurosurgical anaesthesia through appointments at Epworth Hospital, Cabrini Hospital and St Vincent's Private Hospital. He also regularly works with surgeons in other disciplines such as plastic surgery, general surgery and urology with appointments at Knox Private, The Avenue, Melbourne Private and Peninsula Private Hospitals. He provides both in- hours, and extensive out of hours on call service for the surgeons he regularly works with at these hospitals.
In addition to his regular work, Chris keeps up to date with the current best clinical practices through his active participation in the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Continuing Professional Development program. In 2014 he was appointed as an Examiner of the Final Fellowship Examination conducted by ANZCA. This important examination determines whether an anaesthetic trainee doctor has achieved the level required to be recognised by ANZCA as a Specialist Anaesthetist. Being an Examiner of this process enables Chris to constantly review his own knowledge and clinical practices in all fields of anaesthesia to ensure he is offering his patients the safest care guided by the latest evidence and guidelines.
