Associate Professor Lachlan F. Miles MBBS (Hons) PGCertCU PhD FANZCA
A/Prof. Lachlan Miles has been a consultant anaesthetist in full-time public practice at Austin Health since 2016. After graduating from medical school at Monash University with first class honours in 2007, Lachlan completed his basic and advanced anaesthetic training at The Alfred in Melbourne, a subsequent provisional fellowship at the Austin Hospital in cardiac, hepatobiliary and liver transplant anaesthesia, and a further clinical fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and intensive care at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom.
Lachlan’s specialist interests largely concern the management of the critically ill surgical patient, before, during and after their operation. He is an active participant in the peri-operative medicine, cardiac surgery, and liver transplant programs at Austin Health, and has undergone further training in advanced perioperative trans-oeosophageal echocardiography. He holds certification status with the National Board of Echocardiography in the United States (AdvPTEeXAM). |
Lachlan balances his clinical interests with a substantial research portfolio. He holds an academic appointment as an Honorary Principal Fellow in the Department of Critical Care at the University of Melbourne. He is a previous winner of the Douglas Renton Medal for the Primary Fellowship Examination, awarded by ANZCA in 2010, and the Gilbert Brown Prize, the highest honour of ANZCA for clinical research, in 2020. Lachlan completed his PhD at University of Melbourne under the supervision of Professor David Story and Associate Professor Kate Burbury in 2021. His thesis examined the identification and management of non-anaemic iron deficiency in patients undergoing cardiac and colorectal surgery. He has published widely on several other topics related to anaesthesia and peri-operative medicine, and is the principal chief investigator of the IDOCS and NATO studies.
